NGA Summer Scholarship Entry by imorawetz NGA Summer Scholarship Entry by imorawetz
I was asked by one of my teachers at my school if I wanted to have a go at entering the competition (I guess you would call it that??) for the National Gallery of Australia's Summer Art Scholarship.
I had to create a piece of artwork as a response to a piece by Mike Parr, and send it in along with a carefully thought out page of writing to accompany it.
After staying up until 3am and crazily painting something without really caring.. I posted it away to the gallery thinking I had absolutely NO chance.
Anyways, November rolls around and I get the phone call saying I got in! AHHHH lol I still can't believe it :l I was one of 2 Canberra people that had been chosen. Only 2 people from each state were picked!

I have to say that I think it was the most fantastic thing I have EVER done so far, and I met some amazing people during the week :) I want to go back! :(

------
Now onto the painting. !

Because I did this quite a while ago now, I didn't keep the reference photos. I picked some stocks -well i'm hoping they were stocks... please dont kill me!, off here and I guess I must have deleted them after I was done... !!!!!! i'm extreeeemely sorry to the owners of the photos I used as a reference, I would credit you but simply can't :(!

If its your eye that I have used in this piece pleeease let me know and I'll be sure to credit all that I can.

------
I'm definitely going to update the artwork soonish and fix bits and pieces because it looks just so rushed :l so ignore the bad bits pllllzzzz?

*Cries* I'm entering for this year...but after seeing this I know there's no WAY I'm going to get in. *Cries some more* I wish I could somehow relate it to Doctor Who, then I could send in the only drawing I'm actually proud of. Can't see THAT happening!

You could enter pretty much anything as long as you can make something believable up about how it responds to the main artwork, haha.
do you guys have the link to the artwork of which you're responding? i'd love to see it.

That's comforting it fits right into my saying: bullshit and justify! That's the rule I live by and it's gotten me the academic for art every year. :) Doesn't matter what you say or do as long as you can explain it!

I'll probably put mine up here sometime after I've posted it away, sucks I don't get to keep the original though. :(

Hmmm...Doctor Who...going to the future...future Stags made of metal...*laugh* that's a just a little bit far fetched! I think what I've done is okay.

:) Yeah, well I'm getting a little worried now I may not actually make it on time. Applications close the 29th and I'm probably going to have to post it on the 28th Express. It should get there the next day but I hope that means it still counts! ><

I'll definitely put it up here anyway. :)

I remember mine didn't make it and the package got lost I think, luckily I live in a town just outside of Canberra so my mum whipped in there to hand another copy in for me haha!

Amazing job at getting the scholarship, I'm attempting to enter it this year but i just cannot find any inspiration. I have ideas but I just can't translate them onto paper and I feel like they aren't goopd enough and scrap them :(
I love the detail in this and I checked out your gallery and really love the way you do realism, it's beautiful. Your art needs more love :)

Hey there! I'm also attempting to enter and I'm super glad you live in a different state because if I were up against you I'd have no chance! Anyway, good luck and I hope you get in - God I hope I do but I'm not sure if my submission is good enough...I've had the same kind of inspiration block.:(

Heyya! Woah when I first read that I was like, oh dear someone else entering :S Yeah I'm glad we live in separate states to, I do not want to know any competition I have! Haha aww thanks, that means a lot to me!! But don't doubt yourself, these days it is very much about the idea as much as the visual representation, my art teacher gave me a huge speil about this the other day haha, work on your idea if you're not sure of your visual message and good luck :) Are you doing a digital art or traditional? The Stags is a hard artwork to 'respond' to haha, I still don't really understand what we're supposed to do, I hope my reasons for painting what I have are good!!! I'm almost done, so excited!!

Traditional, I'm not so crash hot at digital. >< I'm still uncomfortable with my tablet. I just really hope my idea is enough so they ignore the *cough*rush-ness*cough* of my drawing :P. I just finished mine, though it's kind of simple so I hope it's okay.

Yeah, The Stags is kind of hard to respond to. I had to think about it for ages. It helped that I've seen it three or four times in the flesh though.

I'm posting mine Wednesday I think, it'd better make it there on time! ><

Wow, thank you. That means a lot.
I actually did some work experience last year at the gallery and was able to help sort through all the applicants for this year's scholarship, and looking through you're gallery I would say you definitely have a high chance of getting in with art as good as yours. :)

Oh wow that wouldn've been really good!! Lucky haha. Thanks that definitely boosts my confidence! I thought maybe doing digital art wouldn't be as appreciated as traditional seeing as digital art isn't recognised in Galleries but seeing how yours got in it gives me hope haha. But now I've got to do something amazing as yours. Were many of the entried digital? :D

The ones I looked at had a lot of folded paper and traditional mediums, but there was the occasional digitally made entry which really stood out in my opinion. I think as long as you really understand the piece you're responding to, and have a clear cut reason as to why you've made what you made, then it doesn't matter what medium you use. :) did that make any sense? lol

I was thinking of doing a sculpture but I didn't really have the time because I only descovered my final Idea this month, phew I exhaused so many options!! I hope mine relates well enough to 'the stags' because I kind of went a bit off whatever it was on about (which I have not much of an idea haha!) but it felt right, I hope I can explain this in my response! Yeah it made sense, thanks for the tips :) :) :)
